- 01 March, 2008 Robert Latimer to be released on day parole 27 Feb 08 Robert
Latimer, the Canadian farmer from Saskatchewan convicted of
killing his severely
disabled daughter in 1993, has been granted day parole.
Latimer has maintained his daughter's death was a mercy killing, saying her condition had caused her constant pain and discomfort. See old AGC link in support of this good person. Week of 2 - 8 March, 2008 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. - Matthew 23:13-15 AGC to review California legal decision banning home schooling Thousands of
homeschoolers in California are left in legal limbo by an appeals court
ruling that homeschooling is not a legal option in the state and that a
family who has homeschooled all their children for years must enrol
their two youngest in state or private schools. Justice H. Walter
Croskey in a written opinion said, "California courts have held
that under provisions in the Education Code, parents do not have a
constitutional right to homeschool their children."
The
sweeping February 29th ruling says that California law requires
"persons between the ages of six and eighteen" to be in
"public full-time day school," or a "private full-time
day school" or "instructed by a tutor who holds a valid state
teaching credential for the grade being taught". The Los Angeles-area family at the center of the case was targeted by Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services after one of the children reported "physical and emotional mistreatment by the children's father," according to documents submitted to the court. The
2nd Appellate Court in Los Angeles agreed with the trial court
decision that had found, "keeping the children at home deprived
them of situations where they could interact with people outside the
family". The AGC is
greatly concerned by this ruling. If there was in fact evidence of
"physical and emotional mistreatment by the children's father"then there
were other options; civil and criminal the State could exercise
against the father and not what appears to be a blanket removal
of homeschooling for all Californians. The AGC will examine joining an
amicus brief after a full review of the decision. Read that
decision here (pdf) vote in the web poll!

Thousands of mourners gathered in the Christian village of Kremlis,
Iraq today to bury Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, whose body was
discovered yesterday. Archbishop Rahho, 65, was kidnapped on Feb.
29. His two guards and driver were killed. On Thursday, after asking to
speak to Archbishop Rahho, church authorities were told that he was
dead and given detailed instructions where they could find his body.
An autopsy revealed that the prelate had been dead for five days before his body was recovered. It has not yet been announced whether Rahho died from natural causes or was killed -- there were no bullet wounds to his body, according to Agence France-Presse. The AGC has expressed its condolences to Patriarch Emmanuel III Delly, head of the Chaldean Catholic Church. "Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. - Matthew 24:19-13 24 March 08
